Yumi Kawasaki, principal at Markham Middle School
What inspired you to become an educator and, now, a school principal?
I never planned to be a principal; I wanted to retire as a teacher. I love the classroom because of the amazing educators I had and didn’t have growing up. I want to give students the proper education that will afford them the opportunities they deserve.
What excites you most about leading your school in your community?
I love the community of Watts, its history, and the potential of the beautiful people. Serving Watts is an honor.
Every school has challenges—what do you see as the biggest opportunities for growth at your school?
The greatest challenge is balancing social challenges with academics. Our students come with a lot on their plates, and we have to create an environment that allows them to be who they need to be to succeed.
How has the Partnership supported your professional development?
As a Partnership principal, I have felt supported in my leadership growth through the work with professional development. Having a network to support the everyday issues and building relationships with them has been key.
How do you connect with students and ensure their voices are heard in shaping the school’s future?
I am among students daily. My goal is to create environments that allow their voices to be heard. This has to happen in all campus spaces, including my office, where they often visit to share their thoughts.
Who was a teacher or mentor who shaped your own journey, and what lesson did they leave with you?
My mentor, Ileana Davalos, has modeled what it is to be intentional in everything we do as leaders. She has been in spaces where a woman of color may not have been invited in the past. Lastly, she has always modeled wearing a good pair of heels.
Looking ahead a few years, what do you hope your school community will say about your leadership and impact?
In my absence, I hope the community remembers me as a leader who loved her school, who did right by kids, and smiled through the tough times.
When did you first become principal of your current school?
I became a Principal in 2021 (I think)
What’s something students or staff might be surprised to learn about you (a hidden talent, favorite music/TV show, first job, or go-to snack)?
I took my last dance class while 6 months pregnant with my son. Most people already know my family has a pet possum.
Where did you go to college or grad school?
Loyola Marymount University for BA, CSUN for Master’s, and currently a student at Loyola Marymount University for EdD.
