Luis Barraza, principal at Sunrise Elementary School
What inspired you to become an educator and, now, a school principal?
Growing up as part of an underserved and underrepresented community, if I were to experience life success, I needed to be surrounded by people who believed in my promise and potential. These individuals were my teachers. They inspired me to enter a life of service as an educator, so that I can make a difference in the lives of others. Every day is an opportunity to be a positive influence on the children who need it most.
What excites you most about leading your school in your community?
Boyle Heights is a community filled with pride and history where community members span generations. Together, we have established a culture of joy and belonging that has led to improved academic outcomes. We are all a part of Sunrise because this place means something to us.
Every school has challenges—what do you see as the biggest opportunities for growth at your school?
Our community is at an unprecedented crossroads filled with uncertainty and fear. This is an opportunity to unite for the better good and solidify Sunrise Elementary as a community that is welcoming, accepting, and supportive of all students and families.
How has the Partnership supported your professional development?
The professional development provided by Partnership personnel creates opportunities for collaboration, planning, monitoring, and analysis in the areas of English language arts, mathematics, culture, and parent engagement. The result is a staff that is better equipped to meet the needs of all students and parents who are prepared to support their children.
How do you connect with students and ensure their voices are heard in shaping the school’s future?
Everything that happens at Sunrise is the result of a collective effort. Student voice is integral in developing policy and procedures. This allows them to refine their growth mindset strategies while shaping the future of the school.
Who was a teacher or mentor who shaped your own journey, and what lesson did they leave with you?
Over the years, I have learned to be present in the moment. Whether it’s visiting a classroom, conversing with a parent, checking in with a student, or participating in a school-wide event, I have found that being fully present elevates the joy that being a part of Sunrise Elementary brings. It also allows me to fully connect with those around me.
Looking ahead a few years, what do you hope your school community will say about your leadership and impact?
When the time comes to look back on my tenure as Sunrise Elementary principal, I hope people remember me for doing everything in my power to make a positive difference in the lives of students, parents, staff, and community.
