After the results of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (commonly known as Smarter Balanced) were released on October 2, KPCC reporter Kyle Stokes highlighted one Partnership school – 20th Street Elementary School. After being threatened with a petition for a “parent trigger” in 2015, then new Principal, Mario Garcielita, met with parents to persuade them and gain their trust stating, “we’re going to move this ship in the direction.” Since 20th Street Elementary joined the Partnership in 2016, it has grown by more than 20 percentage points in both English Language Arts (ELA) and in math, placing it in the top five percent in ELA growth and the top five percent in math growth of all LA Unified elementary schools from 2015-16 through 2017-18.
