On November 10, 2022, EdSource published an opinion piece by Alex Karas, the Partnership’s director of arts education, in response to the passing of California’s Proposition 28. The initiative allocates money for 15,000 new positions, almost doubling the current number of certified teachers who provide visual and performing arts instruction in California’s public schools. With this in mind, short-term and long-term creative recruitment strategies are needed.
This is truly an exciting time for arts education and arts educators across the state, but the challenges we face are significant. We need swift and strategic action from schools, districts and the state to make the most of this opportunity to bring teaching and learning in the arts to millions of California students.
