By the Numbers: The State of the LAUSD Teacher Workforce

Students who need the most support are often taught by teachers with fewer years of experience, and this challenge is especially evident in high-need schools serving Black, Brown, low-income, and English learner students.

This fact sheet examines who teaches LA Unified’s students, where staffing gaps exist, and what this means for equity. It highlights teacher demographics, preparation and assignment trends, financial barriers affecting recruitment and retention, and teacher perspectives on job satisfaction and school leadership support. It also underscores the importance of publicly sharing teacher placement, retention, and satisfaction data to ensure high-need schools have equitable access to fully prepared teachers in the long term.

LA Unified has made progress, but significant gaps remain that must be addressed to advance equity. Teacher quality and stability have a significant impact on student outcomes, and supporting and retaining fully-prepared teachers must remain a top priority.
