Meet Jace Avila (he/him), a sixth grader at Markham Middle School. We connected to discuss his career ambitions in STEM. Read more below.
Since he was a third-grade student at Grape Street Elementary, Jace has known that he wants to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Though still undecided on his exact path, he is interested in becoming a doctor but is also exploring software programming and engineering. These ambitions guided his choice of middle school.
“I wanted to come to Markham because of their Health Careers Magnet program,” the 12-year-old said. “I liked that it focuses on preparing students for careers in medicine.”
Being at Markham has helped Jace understand different careers, like what people in these fields do, and how much they get paid. His teachers have played a big role in this by incorporating discussions about the requirements and skills needed for different jobs into their lessons and sharing stories that provide the lived experience of others.
Jace enjoys his math classes the most because they are especially challenging. He does not mind the difficulty since he knows he can always rely on his teachers for support. What he appreciates most is their patience—they always answer his questions when he needs help and are willing to pause the lesson to assist students. Their support has motivated him to explore more time in school learning.
“I am part of the robotics program because it’s a fun way to use math. So far, the coolest thing we have learned is how to program for 3D printing,” he said. “I enjoy these things, but Markham has other programs where anyone can fit in.”
Going to college means a lot to Jace. He understands that college is key to succeeding in a STEM career and wants to make his mother and teachers proud. His mother, who attended community college while pregnant with him, emphasizes the importance of education, shares her own experiences, and supports him by checking in after school and attending school meetings. Jace is also excited about college and eager to share his experiences, just like his teachers, who are always enthusiastic about talking about their college days and playfully recruiting students.
Years from now, Jace envisions returning to his community to share his career journey and encourage other students to follow a similar path. He hopes his story will inspire others to work hard and pursue their dreams.
