We connected over Zoom with Brandy Altamira, an 11th-grade student at Santee Education Complex, whose dream is to become an architect. Learn more about her and her incredible passion for math below.

Brandy is grateful for all the support she has received from the school staff at Santee.

¿Cómo te sientes en Santee? / How do you feel at Santee? 

Me siento muy cómoda. Desde que llegué me han apoyado mucho. Me he sentido apoyada porque me han brindado mucha confianza para lograr mis metas, y de la misma manera he tomado mi propia iniciativa. Si necesito cualquier ayuda, le puedo preguntar y hablar con mi consejero y él me da buenos consejos. Mis maestros bilingües también me indican las maneras en las que me pueden ayudar y cuales pasos puedo tomar para llegar a la ayuda que necesito. 

I feel very comfortable. Since I arrived, the school staff has supported me a lot. I have felt supported because they have given me a lot of confidence to achieve my goals, and as a result, I have the drive to get things done. If I need any help, I can ask and speak to my counselor and he will give me good advice. My bilingual teachers also point me in the right direction and offer me helpful steps to get me to the help I need.

¿Cuáles son algunas de las cosas o actividades en las que te has involucrado en Santee? / What are some things or activities you’ve participated in at Santee?

Me hubiera gustado participar en Water Polo; ¡me encanta nadar! Me encantan los deportas. También “dance.” Me gusta bailar. El año pasado si participe en canto. No soy muy buena, pero quise probar. Apéndice mucho sobre la historia de la música y como leer las notas de música. Este ano estoy participando en LAP donde me apoyan con el inglés. Llegue a Santee en el 2018, y cuando no sabes nada de inglés, clases como esta ayudan mucho. Siento que voy aprendiendo bastante. 

I would have liked to participate in Water Polo; I love to swim! I love sports. Also, dance. I like to dance. Last year, I participated in choir. I’m not very good at singing, but I wanted to try it. I learned a lot about music history and how to read musical notes. This year I am participating in LAP, a course that supports students with learning English. I joined Santee in 2018, and when you arrive somewhere not knowing any English, a class like this helps a lot. I feel like I’m learning a lot.

¿Cuáles son algunas de sus metas académicas? / What are some of your academic goals?

Me encantaría ir a un colegio de 4 años y hacer mi carrera de arquitecta. Adoro las matemáticas y el arte, así que son dos cosas que me ayudarían alcanzar mi meta. Aunque las matemáticas sean muy difícil, no paro hasta que logro entender y solucionar los problemas matemáticos. Me encanta saber cómo es llegar a una solución. Y el arte me gusta también. Soy buena para dibujar objetos más que ha personas, así que me di cuenta que con estos dos intereses yo podría ser una buena arquitecta. 

I would love to go to a 4-year college and pursue a career as an architect. I love math and art, so they are two things that would help me reach my goal. Although math can be very difficult, I don’t stop until I understand and solve my math problems. I love knowing how to solve a problem. And I like art, too. I’m good at drawing objects more than I am at drawing people, so I realized that with these two interests I could be a good architect.

¿Cómo fue tu experiencia al hablar en la reunión de la Junta de Educación? / How was your experience with speaking at the Board of Education meeting? 

Yo me anime a participar por sorpresa. A mí me aviso mi maestro, Mr. Rodríguez, quien me dijo que varios maestros me nominaron para hablar en frente de la mesa directiva por ser buena estudiante y porque me gusta participar. Estaba muy nerviosa y emocionada a la misma ves. Tenia un sentimiento de felicidad por haber sido elegida, pero a la ves estaba nerviosa porque no sabía cómo expresarme muy bien en inglés y no sabía si había dicho bien lo que quería expresar. El día anterior, Mr. Rodríguez me ayudo a prepararme y me dio ejemplos de cómo dar mi testimonio. Fue mi primera vez haciendo esto, y estoy orgullosa de haberlo hecho.

It was a surprise to be asked to participate. I was notified by my teacher, Mr. Rodríguez, who told me that several teachers nominated me to speak in front of the board for being a good student and because I like to participate. I was very nervous and excited at the same time. I was happy for having been chosen, but at the same time nervous because I did not know how to express myself very well in English. I was so nervous that when I spoke I did not know if I had said what I wanted to say correctly. Mr. Rodríguez helped me prepare the day before and gave me examples of how to give my testimony. It was my first time doing this, and I’m proud I did.

¿Hay algo más que quieras agregar? / Is there anything else you want to add?

La verdad es que estoy muy agradecida con mis maestros. Siento que mis relaciones con mis maestros se han fortalecido más durante mis años en Santee. He aprendido mucho de todos ellos. Siempre empujándonos para adelante, como sobresalir, y como ser líderes. 

The truth is that I am very grateful to my teachers. I feel like my relationships with my teachers have grown stronger during my years at Santee. I have learned a lot from all of them. They’re always pushing students to excel and showing us how to be better leaders.
