On March 19th, Principal Latasha Buck of George Washington Carver Middle School published her OpEd in the LA School Report to urge colleagues and LA Unified to more equitably distribute funding for high-need schools, especially elementary schools. On average, at Carver Middle School only 7% of incoming sixth grade students read at grade level. Many of the barriers faced by Latasha’s students have to do with lack of resources (like social-emotional support, nurses, counselors, and intervention programs), as well as homelessness, foster housing, and access to food. In order to better prepare her students and support them academically, Latasha is urging decision-makers to more equitably distribute funds in favor of elementary schools. If students are better prepared during elementary school, the more successful they will be in middle school, and subsequently in high school. Read more here.
