In a recent commentary in the Los Angeles Business Journal, Melanie Lundquist, activist philanthropist, co-founder of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools and vice chair of our board, states that philanthropy plays a vital role in our democracy. She believes that “[…] philanthropists and their foundations can do more by focusing on those hard decisions that may not be immediately popular, particularly among politically influential parties.” The reason is because philanthropists aren’t looking to get re-elected, therefore they have greater opportunity and responsibility to make a difference in people’s lives.
